As part of our Season 02 of CulturallyOurs we have guest contributors from around the world who have generously shared their entrepreneurial journey. It is so interesting to read different perspectives and experiences even beyond the guests featured on our CulturallyOurs podcast.
This week we showcase Lindsey LaRue from Georgia USA.
Lindsey is a wedding and anniversary photographer in the Southeastern US. Based just north of Atlanta in the peachy state of Georgia, she puts emotion to paper by taking the way you feel for your beloved and making it into something you can hold and treasure forever.
Thank you so much for contributing a few words on Global Entrepreneurship for CulturallyOurs.
#1 Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and where are you from and what is your business – just to set the stage if you will.
My name is Lindsey LaRue and I’m a wedding and anniversary photographer for heirloom couples in the Southeastern US and beyond. I’m based in North Georgia in the US, but I am grateful that my career takes me all over the country and world!
#2 What has been your biggest win/ah-ha moment and what has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest wins are always when my couples tell me after the wedding how much of a positive impact I made on their wedding day. Being able to document those moments is amazing, but I’m also there as a friend, mediator, and calming presence on such an emotional day. Knowing I’m helping them savor those moments, making their experience better, and hopefully providing documentation of what will be an enduring legacy is a great joy to me!
My biggest challenge was starting and running this business while also working an incredibly demanding corporate job full-time. The exhaustion and frustration I felt during those 70-80 hour work weeks for a few years was painful and wreaked havoc on my work-life balance. I’m grateful for what it taught me, but very glad it’s over!
#3 As an entrepreneur we sometime are alone at the helm steering our ship without any help and support – both mentally and physically – have you ever felt that way? How and where do you find your support system?
There have absolutely been times in my business where I felt incredibly alone. The entrepreneurial journey can be incredibly isolating and overwhelming without a strong support system! I am incredibly grateful that I’ve met other entrepreneurs over the years that I could build relationships with so we could support each other in our endeavors. Many of these friends I’ve met through networking groups, attending educational workshops, or just being bold enough to ask someone in my area to coffee!
#4 What does the business and entrepreneurial landscape look like where you are based?
The area I am in is heavily saturated with other photographers and competition can certainly be fierce! But what I am grateful for is the abundance of opportunity that my area also provides.
#5 Lets talk motivation / mindset / growth / business for a moment – unlike Corporate where someone else is in charge, for an entrepreneur it is all you – so how do you keep yourself motivated and excited about your future?
I think I’m one of those people who was just meant to be their own boss! I’m not a procrastinator by nature and I actually love to work, so staying motivated and working on my business is just something I love to do! But I will say, it helps that I love the clients I work with. I have worked hard to find my niche within the wedding industry and I can honestly say that my clients keep me motivated and excited everyday because THEY are such a joy to work with.
#6 If you could go back in time to when you first started – would you do it all over again? Or would you change something and what would it be?
Absolutely. It was a long and sometimes overwhelming journey to get where I am, but it has been so incredibly fulfilling and beautiful! I don’t regret it one bit and I’d absolutely do it all over again. The only thing I might change is making the leap to leave my corporate job and pursue photography full-time a little sooner. I dragged my feet a little too long on making that jump and think I could have saved myself some exhaustion and heartache if I’d done so earlier.
Thank you so much Lindsey for taking the time to share your story with us.
