Most people around the world love taking road trips. You get go at your own pace and explore areas you would never see if you simply fly from destination to destination. Heike Pirngruber is out to explore the world on her bicycle and shared how this mode of transportation really helps her slow down, appreciate all the beauty around and reduce her carbon footprint on the environment.

But not everyone can travel the world on a bicycle. Traveling by car is perhaps an easier option for most people but road tripping can take a toll on the environment. If you love to travel but are concerned about your carbon footprint and want to have a more eco-friendly way to travel by car, here are some eco-friendly, easy-to-implement ideas that will get you off to a good start. And as an added bonus, they will help you save money on gas, too.CulturallyOurs Plan an eco friendly road trip

#1 Choose the right vehicle for your adventure

This might seem like an obvious thing but make sure to embark on your road trip in a fuel-efficient vehicle. Now, fuel-efficient does not necessarily mean an electric car. Try and pick a car that gives you the highest gas mileage for the trip. If you are renting a vehicle, look at all your options. Some car rental companies like Avis are starting to rent out fuel-efficient cars. If this is an option for you, consider opting for this instead of choosing a cheaper gas guzzler. Don’t be tempted by a free upgrade on something that you really might not have the need for. If you are traveling in a large group where everyone has a car, consider car pooling. Not only is it less expensive when you divide up the fuel costs, it is also good for the environment that fewer cars are making the same trip. After all, even one large vehicle generates much less pollution than two small ones.

Before you leave, make sure that your car is up to date with all the necessary maintenance work. This not only means a safer ride but also help bolster its fuel efficiency, since factors like tire pressure, air filter quality, and oil levels affect gas mileage throughout the trip.

#2 Pack only the absolute essentials

While it is tempting to just dump everything you think you need in the car because you don’t have to pay for excess luggage, that is far from the truth. In fact the heavier your car, the worse your gas mileage will be, so it’s best to bring only the essentials. Things like rooftop cargo boxes, luggage racks and external towable storage increase the drag on your car and in turn lower the fuel efficiency, ultimately increasing fuel costs and impacting the environment too. For best results, pack light and keep your things in the car’s cabin or trunk.

#3 Plan the fastest route possible

While we are all for off-the-beaten path adventures and getting internationally lost while traveling, that does come with a cost especially when you are traveling by road. Long detours and taking side roads tend to increase fuel consumption in regular fuel vehicles. Instead, use technology to your advantage and map out the shorted route possible. This plays a crucial part in keeping each trip eco-friendly.

If possible, use cruise control once you get on the freeway, or at least avoid sharp braking and accelerating. Remember, your journey will be much more fuel-efficient if you maintain a consistent speed.

When it is hot outside, blasting the air conditioning is not the best idea in terms of fuel efficiency. But unfortunately, most in-vehicle air conditioning systems use ozone-depleting refrigerants and greenhouse gases to keep cars cool. With that in mind, it is  best to keep the AC on low while you’re on the interstate and simply crack the windows while you’re in the city

#4 Practice sustainable eating habits on the road

Of course, no road trip would be complete without food whether it is snacks for the road or even stops to grab a bite to eat. But pre-packaged foods can hurt your health and the environment. So opt for natural foods and homemade snacks like these almond and chocolate energy balls or spiced apple and prune muffins. Even options like fruits, vegetables, nuts, granola, and trail mix, make you feel healthier, generate less waste, and lower your overall carbon footprint. Another option is to pack a picnic lunch and dine al fresco at a rest area or local park. Not only will it give you a chance to stretch your legs but also help you eat healthy and delicious meals even on the road.

It is also a good idea to bring reusable bottles and refill your water at visitor centers, rest stops, and state parks. For bonus points stash reusable utensils and canvas bags in your glove compartments or your travel pack.

When it’s time to pull over for a meal, choose sustainable restaurants instead of fast-food chains. Not only will this allow you to enjoy yummier food and experience the local cuisine, but it will also take a lighter toll on the environment, since these restaurants usually source their packaging and produce more responsibly, donate uneaten food and compost waste, and use energy-saving equipment and practices, among other things.

#5 Believe in the power of one to make a change

All too often, travelers rationalize environmentally harmful behavior by believing that one person cannot really make a difference. But in reality every action has an effect. And when taken together with everyone’s daily actions, individual effects can really make a major difference on the planet. Think small – one less plastic cup, one less plastic straw, one journey in a fuel-efficient vehicle, one local restaurant that recycles all add up. It takes just a little preparation and creativity for travelers to minimize their impact while on the road.CulturallyOurs Plan an eco friendly road tripOnce you’re on the road, the adventure can really begin. Tune into your favorite podcasts, hit play on your pre-made playlist, swap stories with your friends, and keep an eye out for interesting landmarks, and small towns. Road trips are supposed to be fun and eco-friendly one are no exception. It hopefully won’t require too much effort to implement these road-tripping tips. They shouldn’t take away from your experience, but they will make your journey more eco-friendly.
