Back in late 2014 after having backcountry camped and hiked in a few different countries with my family, I was curious to see if there were any publications out there that catered to outdoor adventure and outdoor loving people from a storytelling perspective. I cannot remember when or how but somehow I stumbled onto this amazing website and publication called Another Escape. I got hooked on the just the name and after spending what seemed like hours pouring over the graphics and visuals I ordered a copy of their then current issue. I had to wait for a few weeks because it is a UK based publication and when it finally arrived, I was in love. The narratives, the graphics and the print quality only added to the heartfelt and emotive stories that were captured in the publication.

Another Escape is a lifestyle journal for those who are creative, curious and outdoorsy and aims to inspire a connection with nature and a sense of fulfilment in our everyday lives.

It is not a magazine – it is a coffee table book that I have read cover to cover many times over, with my cup of chai, of course!CulturallyOurs Jody Daunton And Rachel Taylor Another EscapeAnd today I am so thrilled to welcome Jody Daunton and Rachel Taylor, the creative duo behind Another Escape to the CulturallyOurs podcast. I have wanted to speak with Jody and Rachel ever since that first issue I read back in 2014 and to have it happen so many years later is quite surreal. And a perfect way to end Season 02 of the podcast on Global Entrepreneurship.

Jody and Rachel share so openly about their entreprenurial journey – from their humble beginings with their first print run of about 700+ books that they packed into suitcases and took to London to try and get distributors on board to now having Patagonia, yes, the famous outdoor brand, as their print partner. They even recently got a contract with Chinese publishing house to print Another Escape in Chinese! In a day and age where everything is moving to digital, Jody and Rachael are proud to be producing a product that goes back to the roots of storytelling. There is nothing quite like holding a well made book or magazine that you can spend hours and hours reading and getting lost in the pages and the stories.

When I asked them what keeps them going when the going gets tough, they both said that community is very important. They talk about how getting feedback from their readers and even connecting with them online and offline is a huge motivator for the two of them to keep going. Both Jody and Rachel love the outdoors and so doing something that lets them do what they love the most is quite rewarding for them.CulturallyOurs_Rachel_Another EscapeWe also talked about how the publishing space is changing and evolving and how indie publishing is on the rise. People want to connect with people and know about their lives. They want to relate to those everyday narratives. This need to slow down, connect with our surrounding and nature and really live a life that brings fulfillment in all areas is not a fad, it seems to be a deep rooted internal need that is here to stay. And by showcasing passionate people who are inspired by nature, Another Escape shows us how we too can achieve that lifestyle.CulturallyOurs_Another EscapeI know you are going to enjoy getting to know Jody and Rachel, the first dual guest interview, on this episode of CulturallyOurs.
