We all have the ability to make day to day choices with the greater good in mind that has the potential to create significant change – one small step at a time.
Did you listen to Nancy Economou’s inspiring podcast interview? Nancy shared how one single experience changed her life and lead her down the path to start a non-for-profit called Watts Of Love whose mission is to light up the world one solar light at a time. And you know what the really inspiring part of her story is – Nancy had no idea about solar technology or the workings of a non-for-profit before she started. Today more than 30K light bulbs later, she is still going strong on her mission to light up the world.
Our actions and words matter because they have the power to lift people up or to tear them down.
There’s been so much negativity over the globe and often times that stems from lack of understanding. Just because someone looks different than us, lives differently or even speaks differently doesn’t mean they are wrong, and we are right. If 3 seasons of CulturallyOurs have taught us anything it is that we are more similar than we are different. CulturallyOurs was started from this basic need to connect us to one another – from the inside out – focusing on what we have in common – a movement to bring us together to create a more positive culture.
Positivity is a very powerful thing. It has the ability to change communities, countries, and even the world. Even a little bit goes a long way. The more of us who get involved and stay engaged, the greater the impact and the reach will be. And positivity and kindness is also good for your health. Psychology researchers have shown that moments of uplifting positive emotions function like nutrients for creativity, growth, and health.Have you heard of GoodGoodGood company? Good Good Good is an uprising of hopefuls marching against the hate, fear, and injustice in the world by celebrating and becoming accomplices in good work.
Together, we can begin to transform into a kinder, more constructive society by choosing to focus on what’s good every day. It can be something small or something on a larger scale involving more people – a movement or a cause. No matter what, the possibilities for practicing kindness everyday are endless.
Here are a few ideas that come to mind
- When you wake up every morning, rather than reaching immediately to your phone or your to-do list, direct your thoughts to a few positive things that are happening in your life. Say thanks out loud to the universe. Research shows that being specific and authentic when it comes to gratitude can positively affect your physical and emotional health, and even bolster relationships.
- Keep an eye out for random acts of kindness. When you catch anyone doing something for the greater good of others, acknowledge it by thanking that person. And better yet, perform your own acts of kindness like saying good morning out loud to everyone who passes you by, buying coffee for a stranger, giving up your seat on the bus or the train for another person.
- Rather than falling into the rabbit hole of negative news, look for inspiring stories to share and talk about.
- If you find yourself obsessing about something that’s dragging you down, aim to redirect your thoughts to find the good in the situation. Maybe that wrong left turn allowed you to discover a new park you want to visit with your family. Maybe a missed flight means you can call your mom and catch up with your family.
- Commit to saying only positive things out loud and sharing posts or status updates that inspire those who see them.
- Spread the word by telling others about your efforts to be more optimistic.
Change always starts at home and in this case, home can be your internal mindset, your family, your friends or even your community. Don’t underestimate the power of your own sphere of influence. Commit to practicing more positivity in your day-to-day and create your own positive movement and contribute to a healthier, happier world.
There is great strength in the power of positivity to change the world.
