The best thing I had going when I started was kind of being a little naive and learning as I went along. Because I think if I knew everything that it would entail, I may have second thoughts. Today we are in business, we are growing and so thats really exciting for me right now.
These are the words of Megan Steffen of Dishique, a Chicago based entrepreneur who is my guest on this episode of CulturallyOurs.
It is one thing to own an online business selling digital products or even services. That in itself is hard. But I think the dynamics completely changes when you sell physical products, have a store, employ people, fulfill large orders and have overhead. And when you add to that, the fact that the business essentially started as a side hobby for Megan to take her art to the next level and is now an incredibly successful business poised for tremendous growth in 2019, you know you absolutely want to listen, learn and be inspired.
Megan is an absolute delight to speak with. She shares her story so eloquently – from her humble beginnings to see how her art work would look on piggy banks fired in a kiln she rented from someone to now owning her own warehouse, employing a staff and having her products in various boutique and wholesales all across the nation.
When asked what was her process of taking an idea and making it into a product, she said, ‘You know, I was just really curious and watched a lot of youtube videos that showed me how to basically take what I knew really well, art and doodling, and make it into a product!’. Megan is really proud of the fact that all her products are hand made in house which means she is able to customize any of her products and really takes care of her customers.
I loved when Megan shared her formula for success – setting goals for her personal growth as well as the growth of her business, asking and seeking help from mentors and organizations to help her get there and also always keeping her main motivation, her kids, front and center. She also credited her nativity, her itch to do something beyond the normal 9 to 5 and her drive for all the successes thus far.
