CulturallyOurs Handmade Holiday Gift Idea Winter Berry Jam

Handmade holiday gift ideas are quite the rage these days. We read somewhere that if someone gives you a handmade present, they are not being cheap. Consider the time they spent finding the materials and making a unique and special gift. They did it because they love you!

We couldn’t agree more.

In a time when buying a gift, having someone else wrap it at the department store and just putting it under the tree seems to be the easy way out, thoughtful gifts that are handmade hold so much more meaning. We loved Wendy of AV Jorden‘s recipe for making a decadent exfoliating coconut sugar scrub. In case you missed it, check it out here.

This next recipe comes from a 13 year old who loves cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. She loves all things food. She researched this recipe and is sharing it with us today.

From Nainika

I love experimenting in the kitchen and especially love baking. My mom lets me try a new recipe every month or so time permitting. I go through some of her cookbooks and bookmark recipes that I would like to try. This jam is so easy and tastes delicious too. It can be made as Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers. I think it tastes better because it is made fresh without any preservatives. Perfect for that morning toast or even having just a spoonful when you are craving something sweet.

Because I did not use any pectin or other preservative, this jam cannot be stored outside the refrigerator. It is best used within a couple of weeks and should be kept in the fridge.

Winter Berry Jam Recipe:

  • 2 cups rasberries
  • 2 cups strawberries (chopped into pieces)
  • 2 cups sugar (more if you like it sweeter)
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cups water

Method:

Mix all the fruits, sugar and lemon juice in a pan. Turn on the heat and let it simmer/boil for about 30-40 minutes. When the berries are well-cooked and the jam has the preferred consistency, taste the jam and add more sugar if needed. Turn off the heat and let the jam cool. Clean some small glass jars using boiling water. Once the jars are cooled and pour the jam into the jars and seal them right way. And keep them refrigerated until they are ready to consume or gift to your family and friends.
